Regular garden soil has the tendency to harden to a solid mass in pots that makes water and air unable to reach the roots. To promote proper air circulation in plants, put peat moss and vermiculite in a standard soil mixture. Use potting soil instead of regular garden soil for your indoor plants to avoid pests and their eggs from getting into your house. Sand can also be added to your regular soil to enhance pot drainage. You can buy clean sand and sterilize it in a pot of boiled water. Allow it to cool then drain in a fine mesh cloth.
